Reglan is generally prescribed to treat heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux. Reglan is also used to treat slow gastric emptying in people with diabetes (also called diabetic gastroparesis), which can cause nausea, vomiting, heartburn, loss of appetite, and a feeling of fullness after meals.
Reglan can also cause Tardive Dyskinesia, which is a serious and often irreversible movement disorder. Tardive Dyskinesia, a syndrome consisting of potentially irreversible, involuntary body movements may develop in patients treated with Reglan (metoclopramide). Both the risk of developing the syndrome and the likelihood that it will become irreversible are believed to increase with the duration of treatment and the total cumulative dose.
Tardive Dyskinesia is a horrible, devastating syndrome that can last a lifetime. It affects victims physically and mentally. It causes involuntary movements of the tongue, mouth, face, lips and even arms and legs.
