Avandia is generally prescribed for treating type II diabetes. Avandia may be used alone or in combination with other types of anti-diabetic drugs such as metformin (Glucophage) or sulfonylureas as well as insulin. Since it requires naturally-secreted insulin to be effective, Avandia is not recommended for use in type I diabetes where the amount of insulin is very low or absent.
